Everyone should experience Marrakech
at least once in their life. At first it is a shock to the system but you soon
adapt and enjoy the vibrant and exciting city. Haggling was certainly a unique
experience and I would like to share some of my personal top tips and finds!
Daunting at first but then you do get better at it, well once I had bought a
plastic magnet for £8 I soon did! I discovered you will always be asked how
many, how many? I nearly ended up with six pastel coloured scarves! Ok they
were pretty but I didn’t want six! You will also more than likely come out of
the shop with a better product than you initially haggled for and for a cheaper
price!? The sea of colourful leather shoes are totally eye catching, I soon
ignored being warned that the leather can smell from the tanning and
preservation process. I bought a pair of pretty pink ballet shoes which I am
still airing but the smell is disappearing so don’t be too put off. I also knew
nothing about Argan before I visited Marrakech and now I am hooked. Used for
skin and hair, it comes as a soap or oil produced from the kernels of
argan trees. The oil is great for unruly hair but use a very small amount, I
use it when my hair is still damp before styling. The rose oil is lovely
too and smells great on the skin. Oh and not forgetting the famous ‘black soap’
they use for Hammams, which by the way, you can’t come home without having. If
you don’t already know, a Hammam is a steam bath that is traditionally a public
bath, but now many of the riads have their own private ones (our riad had one
in the vaults which was completely tiled and smelt amazing!). At first it is
like a sauna experience but as you lie on the massage table with the scent of
eucalyptus in the air, warm water is poured all over your body and then you are
scrubbed vigorously with black soap using a scrubbing mitt called a Kiis. It
sounds painful but it will be the cleanest and smoothest you have ever been! I
loved it and highly recommend one. I have even been trying to source them in the
UK.
So book yourself a trip to Marrakech
for a unique shopping and beauty experience. I just want to get back on that
plane and do it all over again, and again, and again!
Happy Shopping!
